How to Check If You’re Too Tired to Drive

How to Check If You’re Too Tired to Drive | 5 Star Auto Service

We all know not to drive under the influence, but fatigue behind the wheel is just as dangerous—and far more common. It’s easy to underestimate how much tiredness affects your driving ability, especially if you’ve had a long day or a poor night’s sleep. Drowsy driving slows your reaction time, dulls your focus, and increases the chance of missing critical details on the road.

If you’ve ever caught yourself blinking a little too slowly or forgetting the last few miles of your trip, you may have already driven when you shouldn't have. Knowing the warning signs of fatigue can help you decide when to pull over, take a break, or hand over the keys.

Why Fatigue Affects Driving So Severely

Driving requires constant attention and quick reflexes. When you're tired, your brain can’t process information as fast or as accurately. Your reaction time slows, your ability to stay in your lane suffers, and your judgment becomes impaired.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, being awake for 18 hours straight can have the same effect on your driving as having a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05 percent. Push that to 24 hours, and it's similar to driving with a BAC of 0.10, above the legal limit.

  Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Fatigue can sneak up on you, especially during longer trips or after a stressful day. Here are some of the most common signs that it might not be safe to continue driving:

  • Frequent yawning or blinking
  • Difficulty keeping your head up
  • Drifting out of your lane or hitting rumble strips
  • Missing exits or traffic signs
  • Trouble focusing or daydreaming
  • Feeling irritable or restless
  • Not remembering the last few miles driven

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, it's time to take a break. Pulling over for a 15 to 20-minute nap or switching drivers can make a big difference.

  When You’re Most at Risk

Drowsy driving doesn’t just happen late at night. While overnight and early morning hours are high-risk times, fatigue can strike in the afternoon as well, especially between 1 and 3 p.m. after lunch.

You’re also more likely to drive while drowsy if:

  • You’re a shift worker with irregular hours
  • You’ve been traveling long distances without breaks
  • You’re taking medications that cause drowsiness
  • You have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea
  • You haven’t been getting at least 6–7 hours of sleep consistently

Even if you don’t feel exhausted, the combination of mild tiredness and monotony on the road can be enough to dull your focus and increase the risk of a crash.

What to Do If You Start Feeling Drowsy

The best option is to stop driving entirely. Find a safe place to pull over and take a short nap. Just 20 minutes of rest can restore alertness temporarily.

If a nap isn’t possible, try drinking a cup of coffee or getting out of the vehicle for a brisk walk. These aren’t permanent fixes, but they can buy you a little more time to reach a safe stopping point.

What you shouldn’t do is try to “push through it.” Rolling down the windows, turning up the music, or blasting the A/C might make you feel more awake for a few minutes, but the effects won’t last, and they don’t actually reduce the risk.

  Preventing Fatigue Before You Drive

Planning ahead is the best way to avoid drowsy driving. Before any long trip:

  • Get at least seven hours of sleep the night before
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals before driving
  • Don’t rely on caffeine as a substitute for sleep
  • Schedule breaks every two hours or 100 miles
  • Travel with a passenger if possible and switch drivers when needed

When you're well-rested, you’re a safer, more focused driver—especially on busy highways and winding California roads.
